A dozen metal rods stuck in the anti-migrant wall erected on the border between the USA and Mexico and above the seats that allow children to swing: it is the work that won the Design of the Year award among those Museum of Design candidates London.

Project of: Ronald Rael, professor of Architecture at the University of Berkeley in California and Virginia San Fratello, Design Associate at San José State University

Meet and greet at the hospital
A new custom built art installation – XXX Times Square With Love – in NYC doubles as a street furniture suite that allows visitors to take a load off and check out the famous site from a new perspective.

J. Mayer H. has planted XXX Times Square With Love in the heart of New York City. The public art installation comprises three, pink X-shaped outdoor loungers custom-built for the area, each accommodating up to four people. The legs of the ‘X’ act as a horizontal recliner that allows visitors to lie down and take in a vertical perspective of the surrounding skyscrapers.

Superkilen project
by the BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group studio
a strip that for about a kilometer runs through one of the most multi-ethnic neighborhoods of the city, transforming a park and a square into an unparalleled urban patchwork
Superkilen is conceived as a sort of surrealist collection of objects from all over the world that represent in a different way the multiplicity of the inhabitants of the area, directly involved in the choice of new furnishings: palm trees from China, sports equipment directly from the Los Angeles beach , neon signs from Qatar and Russia, each souvenir is accompanied by small steel plaques that describe the object and the origin, obviously in Danish and in the language of origin.
Pedestrian and bicycle paths, connections to the local transport network, an area for the market and outdoor recreational spaces are the serious ingredients with which the project has been able to play through the lively use of color and the basic idea of reflecting the new multicultural image of the area rather than - as the BIG designers themselves underline - “ remain nostalgically attached to a petrified idea of Denmark as a homogeneous country”.

THE SWING MOVEMENT
The swing movement represents both the movement that two people make when greeting each other by joining their hands, but it also recalls the movement of bowing the head for Asians.

At the same time it also represents the movement that a person makes to know and investigate an object.

different ways of sitting
- only two joints
- no glue used
- just cardboard and twine
only felt
and cardboard
Abbraccio means "Hug" in italian and that wants to celebrate how important is the connection between the material, it can protect us but it can be also functional and recyclable. Infact, for this seat, that is an hybrid between a chair and a armchair, no glues or polymers has been used for this seat.

Furthermore, in order to facilitate the production but above all the disposal, it has been tried to create as little joints as possible. The seat is in fact held together by only two joints placed at the base and made with twine and cardboard, the latter serves to stiffen the joint and prevent the tension of the twine from tearing the felt.
WHAT DO I NEED FOR MY PERSONAL MEET AND GREET?
context
With the industrial revolution and with the ever-increasing development of globalization, industrialization and homologation, nature has increasingly become a mere dispenser of raw materials or spaces to be exploited, emptied or directly destroyed.

However, fortunately in recent years we are realizing that we can no longer continue like this, the earth is our most precious resource and we certainly do not have another one available.

The Abbraccio chair was therefore designed for all those who feel the need to take a moment to connect with themselves and, above all, to connect with nature. The purpose of this seat is in fact to generate, once seated, a sort of awareness in the user about how important it is to thank every day for what you have, because very often now we take too many things for granted without realizing how lucky we are.

Abbraccio is a seat designed for the outdoors and specifically to be taken to parks, beaches or near canals, so what better position, therefore, to thank you for what you have, if not directly in the middle of nature?

The seat could also be arranged, or directly brought by the owner, in specially spots in order to be able to give rise to meeting points. In these people can meet to meditate in company or even simply to allow people who want to have and carry out this awareness or, who simply want to approach this new lifestyle, more aware and grateful for nature, to carry out some chat about it.
